Devil / Deep Blue
Help Parry, the Platypus, survive on this horrific island where they are trapped "between the devil and the deep blue sea". Survive and craft on this desolate island that many call, "Lucifer's Tripe".
How To Play
- Launch up the game
- Make sure to watch for Parry's thoughts at the top right corner, they will try to guide you through those
- The volume settings are defaulted to fairly quiet values to be sure not to hurt anyone's ears, if it's too quiet feel free to change them!
- If you have the time please write up something in my feedback form! I would really appreciate it!
Controls
- Move: WASD or Gamepad Left Stick
- Aim: Mouse position or Gamepad Right Stick
- Hit/Attack: Left Click or Right Bumper
- Sprint: Shift or Gamepad East Button
- Equip slot: Key 1-4 or Gamepad D-pad
- Open Inventory: Key I or Gamepad 'Select'
- Open Crafting: Key C or Gamepad 'Start'
- Open Settings: Escape key (which does mess with web version if you have it maximized)
Tips
- Start out getting Stones, Sticks, and Grass (Plant Matter)
- Using a stick instead of bare hands early on can make collecting items faster
- If you can only craft one item of a set, start with the Axe
- Once you have a primitive tier axe or hammer, look for loot chestts
- Loot chests can respawn after several minutes so there is technically no limit to the number of times you can loot them, but there are around 4 of each chest variety
- Crafted axes are still fairly slow against trees, Designed axes are much more efficient
- Masterwork tools are as good as they get, but they can still roll 0s against things
- If you are playing the web version and need to reset, refresh the page. Quitting to the menu and returning will just restore the previous session, On desktop versions this means you will need to quit and restart.
Tool Tiers and where to get them
| Tier | Crafted With | Use On |
|---|---|---|
| Primitive | Stone, Stick, Plant matter | Loot Chests |
| Crafted | Crafted Sticks, Plant Matter, Steeled Rosewater | Trees and Stone piles |
| Designed | Crafted Sticks, Plant Matter, Sapphic Lump | Trees and Stone piles (more effective) |
| Masterwork | Wood, Plant Matter, Divine Egg | Anything (end tier) |
MDev26
This game was originally made for MDev Jam 2026. The entirety of the game was made during the duration of that jam and was made specifically for the theme "In The Middle".
When playing, you can open the menu to toggle a few features that can make experiencing the game much easier such as giving yourself infinite stamina, health, or always rolling max damage
How this fits the theme
- Parry is a platypus which I would say is kindof In The Middle between Beaver and Duck
- Parry is stuck In The Middle of the ocean while In The Middle of an archipelago
- Parry would have been In The Middle of two feuding families if I had scoped better
Compromises I Had To Make
- Originally, I wanted this game to feature two feuding families on the archipelago which the player would be trapped between. This would have further supported the theme of "In The Middle" however when I ran short on time, I opted to polish the core features I had rather than try to add entirely new features and sort out balancing
- I had to change the consumption rates of thirst/hunger/stamina several times across playtesting. I got it to a point where I feel like the game is entirely too easy, which I suppose it for the best for a game jam. But in a future release I would like the game to be much more challenging
Known Issues
- Discarding an item will mess with the indices of the item bar, but there are no limitations on how much you can carry of any given item so there is basically no need to discard anything.
- There is no "pity system" on hit rolls so just like in a TTRPG you can have a cool weapon but keep rolling 0s. That is why I added the "ineffective" label, for times where it is literally impossible to ever roll a possible number with the current item
- Controller support in the menus is pretty bad. I need to talk to some Godot experts to sort out how to make menus more compatible with controllers.
- Equipping items doesn't always work when clicking on the slot, but pressing the correct input for that slot still works.
Next Steps for this game
I am surprisingly happy with this game. I am hoping to get some more robust feedback, sort out the major bugs, and add in the feuding factions on the archipelago to make surviving much more challenging and rewarding. After that I think I'll be putting this up on Steam as my first Steam project, so I can start having a proper presence over there.
